House Republicans Move on David Chipman Impeachment

Representative Matt Rosendale (R-MT), backed by 11 Republican co-sponsors, introduced a resolution to impeach President Biden’s nominee to lead the ATF, David Chipman – before he’s even confirmed. The resolution includes two articles. The first is that by failing to support and defend the Second Amendment, he failed the Constitution. The second is that he lied to Congress about losing his service weapon during his time as an ATF agent. Rep. Rosendale explains:

“The confirmation of David Chipman to the ATF would be a direct threat to the second amendment rights of Americans and the rule of law. Not only has Chipman previously given false testimony to Congress, but his statements on gun-control are evidence that his confirmation would be a failure to support and defend our constitutional rights. If appointed, both are impeachable offenses and worthy of Congress to consider his removal.”

Co-signers include Reps. Bob Good (R-VA), Jeff Duncan (R-SC), Marjorie Taylor Greene(R-GA), Ralph Norman (R-SC), Jody Hice (R-GA), Diana Harshbarger (R-TN), Scott Perry (R-PA), Alex Mooney (R-WV), Andy Harris (R-MD), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), and Andrew Clyde (R-GA). Chipman’s confirmation moved out of committee almost a month ago, but the full Senate vote still isn’t scheduled. It’s unclear as of yet whether Chipman would even be confirmed, as at least five senators who generally vote Democrat have yet to publicly commit. Sens. Jon Tester (D-MT), Angus King (I-ME), John Hickenlooper (D-CO), Joe Manchin (D-WV), and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) all claim to be undecided.

Regardless of the merits of the impeachment articles, the chances of success should Chipman be confirmed are slim to none. Impeachment in the House requires a majority of representatives – which Republicans don’t have even if 100% of the GOP backs the resolution.
