Tens of thousands of websites are experiencing shutdowns as what appears to be a Domain Names System (DNS) failure began just after 11 a.m. EST. The affected websites are mostly in the USA and Europe, and cases continue to rise at the time of publishing.

Home Depot, Amazon, FedEx, UPS, and numerous other sites are struggling to get back online, as are a number of large UK brands.

A “livemap” on Pingdom.com, which tracks outages globally, displays that more than 30,000 sites are down worldwide as of 12:30 p.m. EST, with the rate rising by roughly 100 extra per minute and a half.

What caused the DNS error remains unknown for now, and it is unclear if this was a simple technical issue gone awry or something related to a purposeful cyber attack.

Liberty Nation will keep you informed on this developing story.
